Great live music, energetic, friendly people of all ages, very social. What's not to like?
I've heard New England Contra Dancing described many ways. One of my favorites is
“This is what would happen if square dancing and swing dancing had a baby.”
Great for both couples and singles - the tradition is to dance with many different partners during the evening, even if you came with someone.
Contra dancing is really easy. Think of long lines of partners doing really simple square dance moves, but much faster and no petticoats, cowboy hats or bolo ties to be seen. And with GREAT live music! Cross-generational, too. I have been to dances where people from 6 years old to 80+ are all dancing together. One aspect of this type of dancing is that it’s not about fancy footwork. It’s pattern and structure. So it tends to attract some very smart people - engineers, mathematicians, JPL/Caltech folks, teachers and professors, medical professionals - people who are more comfortable with pattern and repetition than with improvisation.
